Our Steel Story
Sound design for a documentary about the steel industry of the North East under Thatcher, a film where the wrong soundtrack would have been an argument.
Objective
A documentary about the collapse of an industry is a film about a place people remember. The audience for it includes the people it happened to, which sets the bar: anything that sounds like a mood being manufactured is heard immediately, and once it is heard the film stops being trusted.
The brief was sound design exclusively: no score to hide behind, and nothing to do the emotional work except the world of the film itself.
Creative response
Sound design across the cut. Without music, every decision is a decision about what the place sounded like: the weight of the machinery, the scale of the sheds, the quiet where the noise used to be. Restraint is the whole technique; the film is carried by what is left in rather than what is added.
