Writers Block
Foley and sound design for a North East writing collective’s animated stories, and an original score for their Arc Noir exhibition.
Objective
Two commissions for the same client, a year apart, and they needed opposite things.
The animated stories needed foley, the invented, performed sound that makes a drawn object have weight. The Arc Noir exhibition needed the reverse: not realism but atmosphere, a piece of music that could carry a room full of people looking at something else.
Creative response
For the animations, foley art and sound design: footsteps, handling, the physical detail an audience never consciously registers and always notices the absence of.
For the exhibition, an original composition written as a homage to classic film noir, D.O.A. and The Big Sleep, cut with the modern end of the same tradition, Sin City and Fight Club. Working to a genre that specific is a constraint worth having: it gives the audience a reference they already own, so the music does its work before anyone has decided to listen to it.
