Creative response

A 44-page report titled “Disruptive Influences 2: The FinTech Revolution”, dated July 2016, carrying a foreword from the CII.

It is explicitly the second report in a CII series on disruptive technology, following an earlier edition published roughly six months before. Its subject is the barriers facing FinTech, funding, culture and regulation, and it addresses the then-recent Brexit vote and what it meant for the sector.

Report design, the design and setting of the 44-page document.

The research and policy analysis were produced jointly with the CII. The design job was to make forty-four pages of it navigable, and to make the second edition read as part of a series rather than as a one-off with a number in the title.

The work was report design.

A sequel is a design constraint

Publishing a second report six months after the first changes what the design has to do. It has to be visually continuous with the first edition, so the series reads as an ongoing body of work rather than a repeated press push, and it has to look current, because a report addressing a referendum held weeks earlier cannot look like it was templated a year ago.

The timing is the sharpest thing about this artefact. A July 2016 FinTech report is being designed while the ground under its subject is still moving, to a publication date that cannot slip without the analysis dating. Speed and consistency are the requirement, in that order.
