Objective

A studio's own showreel is the one piece of work with no client to please and no brief to hide behind. It has to demonstrate range without looking scattered, and it has to sound like a company rather than a compilation.

That last part is the audio brief specifically: a reel with borrowed music says nothing about the studio. A reel with its own says everything.

Creative response

Original music composition, sound design across the cut, and the studio's audio branding, a sonic signature the studio could carry into other work.

Audio branding is the part that outlasts the reel. A visual identity is obvious to commission and an audio one almost never is, which is why most small studios have a logo and no sound. Having one makes every subsequent piece recognisable before the picture resolves.
